A PowerPoint presentation which explains how the Union Flag came into being. It includes the history of the linking of the English and Scottish flags due to James I's insistence on a Great Britain, there is a link provided for pupils to discover how Ireland's flag came to be included, and an explanation of why the dragon of Wales is absent, providing a discussion point about the fairness of union.

      • A nicely presented, clear explanation for primary level children about the elements which make up the Union Flag. The link allows pupils to do their own research on part of the topic and the inclusion of the reson for the absence of the Welsh dragon on the flag gives a great opportunity for discussion about unity of Great Britain and the pupils' opinions of fairness of unions, where pupils may be able to bring into the discussion their own cultural elements of differing parts of the UK and other countries' perceptions of it. This would be a particularly interesting discussion with Year 6.
