Breathing and respiration

Biology, Human and Animal Biology, Age 11-14, Age 14-16

Animated presentation on the human respiratory system. Covers the structure and function of alveoli, with an explanation of aorobic and anaerobic respiration. 8 slides

1Breathing and respiration2The breathing system takes air into and out of the body so that oxygen can get into the blood and carbon dioxide can pass out of the blood into the air.BreathingCan you name each part labeled on the next slide?3LarynxDiaphragmRibsIntercostal musclesTracheaBronchusBronchiolesAlveoli4Alveoli (air sac)
Alveoli help oxygen get into the blood and carbon dioxide out by having:
A large surface area
A good blood supply
A moist surfaceAirRed blood cellsCapillaryThe next slide shows the alveoli in action 5Alveoli6Aerobic respiration
Breathing is necessary because all living cells respire to get energy. Respiration normally needs oxygen
In cells:
Glucose + Oxygen ? Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
7Anaerobic respiration
If there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration muscle cells turn the glucose into lactic acid:
Glucose ? Lactic acid + energy
Lactic acid causes cramp
This can happen if muscles work so hard they cannot get enough oxygen from the blood
8The energy that is released during respiration is used to:
