Presentation that discusses what matter is made from: elements and compounds; electrons, protons, neutrons and the structure of teh atom. Great for revision or a brief introduction. It includes a brief historical background. [10 Slides].

posted 13/06/2008Ionic Bonding

PowerPoint with animations showing several examples of ionic bonding. Lots of dot cross diagrams to explain how atoms lose or gain electrons to become ions. It includes Giant Ionic structures and physical properties. [10 Slides]. This resource would be complemented well by the resource: "Ions plenary".

First presentation introduces Groups, Periods and chemical symbols, including a short question exercise. It discusses the tables devised by Newlands and Mendeleev. Second resource briefly covers properties of Groups 1, 7 and 0, and focuses on explaining trends in reactivity within and between groups. Worksheet summarises the alkali metals. It should preferably accompany a practical demo.

Two very straightforward PowerPoints (one normal and 1 harder), in which students choose answers A,B or C and write them down on paper. The questions cover solids, liquids and gases. Answers are included on the last half of the slide show for the first presentation. There is some overlap of questions between the two resources. For added tension I suggest a timer on the whole show! [63 Slides]

posted 11/06/2008Electrolysis - Summary

Embedded animations showing Ions in solution, Cations and Anions, and Electrolysis. The two one slide electrolysis animations are: Purification of Copper & Electrolysis of Aluminium. Ideally used as a summary at GCSE [5 slides].
