Many animations: measurement of rates; effect of concentration, temp, surface area, catalysts. A fun interactive whiteboard quiz hosted by Mister T; a chance for pupils to interpret a rate of reaction graph. Some of the excellent animations are free samples from Crocodile Clips Chemistry (see link below). Some are from the excellent www.sciencepages.co.uk who kindly gave permission for their use.

Simple PowerPoint that presents colour images of the hazard symbols students come across in a laboratory. The last slide is a quiz to test them on their memory of each. [7 Slides]. The worksheet is a cut and stick exercise where students match the same set of symbols to their meanings.

posted 20/10/2008Fireworks:Combining Chemicals and Colour

A colourful and interactive presentation that revises simple chemical reactions in the context of fireworks. Students are asked to consider combustion reactions and some detail is provided about how fireworks react. It includes a link to a flame test video.

posted 01/08/2008Displacement Reactions Whist Card Game

A card game designed to reinforce and consolidate students' understanding of displacement reactions of the halogens. The rules are similar to whist with students a pair of cards if a reaction would occur. The game usually prompts much student discussion about the reactions. There is a set of cards to print out, and a teacher sheet with instructions about how to play.

Notes on salts the formation and naming of salts from acids and metals. There is a quiz of nine interactive questions. These test the naming of salts, and also knowledge of the reactants and products of reactions: metal carbonates, metal oxides, acid and base etc.

posted 08/03/2008The Alkali metals

This presentation summarises the physical and chemical properties of the alkali metals. It contains interactive slides for class questions and particle diagrams to show the reactions with oxygen, chlorine and water. The ppt finishes with a summary activity. I have used this as a whole lesson with a teacher demonstration of the alkali metals and have found that students understand the work well.
