This lesson plan, ideal for citizenship classes, is based on real incidents in 2006 when two very different worlds, normally separate from each other, came into sudden direct contact. It provides an opportunity to explore what happens when human suffering and extreme distress is abruptly and unexpectedly encountered.

This is an activity that I used with one of my high school students who has a cognitive disability. We went Christmas shopping to see how much he would have to spend if he bought everyone a present. We talked about buying someone something they would like without spending too much or being too cheap.
