This PowerPoint presentation centres around challenging students preconceptions of Africa as a continent by examining images and challenging discussions. Students also explore their ideas of education in Africa and how the media portray life on the continent. A levelled task and hot seating provide AfL opportunities as a plenary.

1Africa or not?L.O: Explore common misconceptions about Africa. All MUST decide on images that represent Africa (Level 4) Most SHOULD describe what the media portrays Africa to be like (Level 5) Some COULD analyse what our ‘preconceptions’ are of Africa (Level 6) (SEAL – Empathy)2Starter:Global Eyes!Stick in the outline of the eye across one page in your book. Close your eyes and think about Africa. Think about: What the different countries look like. What the climate is like. What jobs do people do? Where do people live? What food do they eat? 3. Open your eyes. Write key words and draw images in the middle (pupil/iris) of your eye to describe what you saw/imagined. 4. Now share your ideas with a partner – add their extra ideas to the white of your eye. Q. Where do you think your ‘perceptions’ of Africa have come from? 34 Africa is all too often referred to as if it is a country and people forget or do not realise that there is great diversity within this continent. Diversity, as already stated starts with the physical environment and the spread of people but there are also huge variations in culture, language, religion and lifestyle. You are about to see 16 images. The photos were taken in many different countries. Your task is to decide if each photo was taken in an African country or not. It would be useful to look for clues in each photo so that rather than guessing, you had some evidence for your answers.
